The 18th Wildcat Multihull Regatta concluded after six races for the A-cats and five races for the Non-Spinnaker and Spinnaker classes. Lou Adiano, PRO, conducted a flawless series of races with the support of LESC members June Howells, Dennis Oldham and Kris Adiano on the Signal boat and Gus Chennells, David Hepting, Pirate Dave Meaker and Greg Robinson on the Mark/Safety boats. Traditional BBQ pulled pork was served by Kathy Ingram and Myra Kinnie following racing on Saturday evening. Winds were light to moderate with only moments of trapeze work required. Patience and concentration were key to keeping boats moving and picking the fastest path to the weather mark while avoiding dead spots on the race course. In the A-cat Class, there was a battle between Chris Cordes, Bob Curry and Craig Yandow for top spot. Bob Curry was leading by 2 points after the first day of sailing. However, consistent sailing paid off as
Chris took the top honors by one point with Bob and Craig finishing up the top three spots. Non-Spinnaker fleet had a similar battle between three top sailors with Nelson Wright single-handed his Prindle 15, and Craig Yates single-handed the Hobie 16, and Richard Uschold and Mike Taylor sailing the Prindle 18. In the Spinnaker class, Aine Porter helmed the Nacra 20 with crew John Fondrk sailing the course with ease and often catching the first starters. Our second day greeted us with fog until around 10a.m. when it began to clear. Winds were a bit better than Saturday, but never really built to a brisk breeze the sailors wanted. Sailors again needed to pick pressure areas going up the course and avoiding any dead spots. At times it was frustrating to round the weather mark with shifting winds and holes occurring. Only two races were completed Sunday due to dying winds and a large threatening black cloud coming from the east that brought strong winds and brief rain showers. Special Thanks to Craig Yates for encouraging our youth sailors to compete in catamaran sailing. Thanks also to our sponsors Terry Loewen with Hi-Def Embroidery, and Steve Caron for providing the added special touches for the regatta meals.
